Is Poverty a Curse? Let’s Talk About Generational Beliefs

For many of us, money has always felt like a struggle.

It’s not just the numbers in the bank account — it’s the weight behind them. It’s the stories we were told growing up. It’s the mindset we inherited without even realizing it.

So, I want to ask a bold question:

Is poverty a curse?

I don’t mean a magical spell or something superstitious. I mean: is poverty passed down like a heavy backpack we were never meant to carry?

Let’s talk about it.

What Is a Generational Belief?

Generational beliefs are thoughts, habits, and patterns passed down through families — often without question.

Maybe you grew up hearing:

  • “Money doesn’t grow on trees.”

  • “We’re just not meant to be rich.”

  • “As long as the bills are paid, we’re doing fine.”

  • “Rich people are greedy.”

  • “We’ll always struggle — that’s just how life is.”

If you’ve heard (or said) these phrases, you’re not alone. They shape how we see the world, how we handle our finances, and what we believe we deserve.

How Beliefs Become a Barrier

When you grow up in survival mode, you learn to hustle, sacrifice, and get by — not to thrive, dream, or build.

You might feel guilty for wanting more.

You might sabotage success without even realizing it.

You might stay stuck because you don’t believe things can change.

But here’s the truth: Your past doesn’t get to write your future.

Breaking the Cycle

Here’s what I believe: Poverty is not your identity. And it’s not your destiny.

But breaking the cycle takes awareness, intentional steps, and sometimes, support from someone who sees what’s possible for you — even when you can’t yet see it yourself.

It starts with asking hard questions like:

  • What did I learn about money growing up?

  • Which beliefs are helping me — and which ones are holding me back?

  • What do I want to teach my children instead?

You Are Not Cursed — You’re Capable

Let’s be clear: poverty is hard. But it’s not a life sentence. And it’s not your fault. If you’ve been stuck, it’s because no one ever taught you a new way — not because you’re broken.

I believe God designed you for more than just scraping by. I believe you can change the story for your family. And I believe that when we shift our mindset, we unlock not just financial breakthrough — but peace, purpose, and possibility.
